House Rules for Listings

Effective 19 October 2026.
Terms of ServicePrivacy PolicyHouse Rules

Everything you put on your listing for others to see is checked against these rules when you save it: your name (or your organization's), your fields at Public or Connections, a vanity URL, and an organization's member directory names and staff titles. Private fields, messages and notes are never checked. If something is refused, the reason shows under it, and unless it falls under rule 1 or 2, you can tell us it's wrong and a person will look at it.

How we judge a listing. We read what a listing means, the way an ordinary reader would, not whether it contains a particular word. A word that is crude or offensive in one place can be a name, a place, a title or a piece of history in another.

When in doubt, we allow it. If something could fairly be read either way, it's allowed, and anyone who objects can report it to a person. The exceptions are rules 1 and 2: anything that could involve a minor sexually, or could be offering sex for money, is refused.

What's welcome

  • Your real name, nicknames and business names, whatever else their words can mean.
  • Everyday language, everyday swearing included.
  • Your opinions, beliefs and causes, religious and political ones included.
  • Plain talk about sex, sexuality, bodies, identity and health.
  • Saying that you make adult content, without linking to it from your listing.
  • Your usernames, handles and web addresses as they are, within the rules below.
  • Hard subjects, when the point is to inform, support or oppose.
  • Religious and cultural symbols, used as what they are.

What's not allowed

  1. Sexual content involving anyone under 18, or anything that seeks, offers or sexualizes minors.
  2. Offering or advertising sex for money, in any words.
  3. Explicit sexual description.
  4. A link or handle that leads to adult content. You can say the work exists; link to it from your other accounts.
  5. Hate aimed at people for who they are: their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability, slurs included.
  6. Threats of violence against anyone.
  7. Attacks on a particular person or organization, including posting their address or other details. A listing is about you, not a place to call out others.
  8. Swearing beyond everyday use: a listing that is mostly profanity, or swearing aimed at someone.
  9. A vanity URL that isn't clean. It's an address on phonebook.directory, so it has no swearing, sexual words, slurs or insults, even ones allowed elsewhere on a listing. Your real name is always fine.

See something on a listing that breaks these rules? Signed in, use Report on the listing; anyone can write to takedown@phonebook.directory. Questions go to support@phonebook.directory.
